Those of you who have used your Garza Blanca Residence Club membership to stay at Villa del Palmar Cancun will know that Isla Mujeres is a beautiful Mexican Island which can be found just off the coast of Cancun in the Mexican Caribbean, just over the water from the Villa del Palmar Cancun resort. You may be interested to know that this idyllic island was recently recognized by the Mexican Board of Tourism (SECTUR) as being worthy of the coveted classification as a Pueblo Mágico.
What is a Pueblo Mágico?
Launched in 2001 by the Mexican Board of Tourism, the Pueblos Mágicos program was designed to recognize unique towns all over Mexico which provide visitors with a “magical” and memorable experience whether for their natural beauty, cultural interests, or historical riches.
Isla Mujeres is one of those places that offers all three qualities, captivating visitors with its charms. Now, Isla Mujeres joins more than 80 towns and villages in Mexico which currently hold the title of Pueblo Mágico.
Falling under its spell
When you visit Isla Mujeres it’s very easy to fall under its spell. This is a small island at just 2,000 feet wide and less than 5 miles long, but it’s unbelievably beautiful and boasts some truly remarkable beaches. You can reach this island by ferry from the Puerto Juarez dock; the ferry leaves every half hour all day until 11pm and will get you there in about 18 minutes.
You might also choose to take the car ferry that is in walking distance from Villa del Palmar Cancun, although it takes longer and has fewer departures. During the ferry ride you will see incredible views of Cancun and Isla Mujeres.
Day trips to Isla Mujeres
When you arrive to this truly magical village you will discover that the pace of life here is unhurried, relaxed and calm. You can explore every inch of this island in a day whether it be by foot, on a bicycle, or in a golf cart. You could easily lap the island in an hour on a scooter or golf cart, which you can rent from a number of companies right by the landing dock.
Attractions for everyone
Isla Mujeres has something for everyone. From the dolphin centre to the turtle sanctuary, from the Mayan temple to the Goddess Ixchel on the southern end of the island, and even to the more modern and man-made attractions like the nautical museum.
Isla Mujeres’ Beaches
If time on the beach is on your agenda when you visit Isla Mujeres, you should start with Playa Norte. You can find this beach by taking a left from the ferry port, and you won’t be disappointed! It boasts some of the best waters for swimming on the island (the waters are shallow, clear, and warm), and gleaming white sand to boot! Playa Norte is the perfect place in which to spend an afternoon, a day, or even just a few hours. Why not try the local delicacy, eating a fish dish known as Tikin Xic? On the southern side of the island there are some truly wonderful coral reefs where you can swim and snorkel.
Mexico’s newest Pueblo Mágico truly lives up to its name, and is a place where you can unwind in the beauty of nature! Just remember to bring your sunscreen and beach towel.
