Las Posadas

Las Posadas: A Traditional Christmas Celebration in Mexico

Posadas are a yearly religious Christmas tradition observed by Catholic Mexicans. Posada literally translates to “Inn” and it is celebrated in Mexico and some parts of the United States. Latin America celebrates something similar known as “Novena.”  The Posadas symbolize the journey that Joseph and Mary made to find a safe place where baby Jesus could be born. These community celebrations start on December 16th and continue through each of the 9 nights leading up to Christmas Eve, ending on December 24th. The nine nights of posadas are said to represent Mary and Joseph’s nine day journey from Nazareth to Bethlehem.  The posadas are organized by neighborhood committees and each night, a different family hosts the celebration. Other people in the neighborhood contribute food, candy, and piñatas so that the host family isn’t responsible for all the costs.  The celebration begins with a procession to the host’s home and along the way participants sing Christmas carols. Sometimes people act out the parts of Mary and Joseph and lead the procession and other times just their images are carried.  Once the procession has arrived at the host’s home, a special song (La Cancion Para Pedir Posada) is sung. …

Turkey and Football on Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving Day is one of the most important holidays in the United States. It is a day for family and friends to get together to enjoy a feast and give thanks for their blessings. Turkey and stuffing are the traditional Thanksgiving fare.  This tradition started with The Mayflower Pilgrims back in 1621 when they gathered for an autumn celebration after their first successful corn harvest. They invited the Indians to thank them for their help teaching them how to cultivate the land and increase the productivity of the crops. The celebrations lasted for three days.   In the years that followed, Thanksgiving became an official American holiday and has been celebrated since then with great enthusiasm.  For many Americans, a traditional Thanksgiving meal would not be complete without a turkey, but Thanksgiving NFL Football has played a very important part in the tradition as well since 1934, when the first Thanksgiving day football game was played between the Detroit Lions and the Chicago Bears.  In order to continue this well-established tradition of feasting and football, on November 28th Garza Blanca Preserve in Puerto Vallarta celebrated Thanksgiving with …

Lady of Guadalupe

Puerto Vallarta Celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe

If you are in Puerto Vallarta during the first 12 days of December, don’t miss one of Puerto Vallarta’s most beloved celebrations, the Festival of Guadalupe. This 12-day long festival celebrates Our Lady of Guadalupe (Día de Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe,) the patron saint of Mexico.   The festival takes place between December 1st and December 12th  as hundreds of people take over the downtown historical zone near the Cathedral of our Lady of Guadalupe. The Cathedral is a well-known landmark in Puerto Vallarta with an elaborate crown in the shape of a tiara on the top.   During this important festival, the streets of Puerto Vallarta become filled with devoted followers making their way through the city in traditional ‘Peregrinaciones‘ (pilgrimages) or processions that start from the corner of Juarez and 31 de Octubre streets and continue to the Cathedral where they place gifts for the Virgin and receive a special blessing from the Priests. Baptisms, confirmations, first holy communions and even weddings take place within the local community to coincide with this special date.  Thousands of people from schools, businesses and communities from PV and surrounding towns come to pay homage to the appearance of the Virgin of Guadalupe to the peasant Juan Diego on December 12, …

Beach Life: Living by the Sea Cures All

Beach Life: Living by the Sea Cures All

Besides the amazing views and the soothing effect of the sound of waves crashing on the shore, studies have shown that spending time by the ocean has numerous health benefits and improves general well-being.   In the 18th and 19th centuries, doctors actually prescribed trips to the beach since the ocean air was considered a cure for almost any illness and had supposed healing powers. Living by the ocean is simply good for your health and can reduce your risk of obesity and lower the incidence of heart disease and other ailments.   More and more foreigners are purchasing Mexican real estate on the coast to enjoy the benefits of living at the beach. What better way to bring relaxation and relieve stress? People that live by the ocean not only report reduced stress, but they live in an environment that encourages physical activity such as walking along the beach or swimming in the ocean. Garza Blanca homeowners with properties in Puerto Vallarta have said that living at the beach is not only luxurious and enjoyable, but it happens to be good for you too!  Recently, scientists have conducted several experiments related to the ocean’s health benefits. One such experiment focused on showing photographs of ocean views, green fields or cities to study participants, and then asking how much they were willing to …

Halloween is a special time of year and this year it was made even more special as Garza Blanca Preserve Resort & Spa in Puerto Vallarta transformed into a scary atmosphere to celebrate this special holiday in a spectacular style with our valued guests and members. The main event was our Spooky Trolly.   Daily our guests of Garza Blanca and Hotel Mousai get transported around the resort by our famous trolly decorated to look like 1930s streetcars with open windows that allow guests unobstructed views of the Preserve’s lush jungle surroundings.     On October 31st,  as we made the transition into a “scary hotel” for one night only, our guests were summoned to the Garza Blanca Lobby to board the Spooky Trolly with departures at 7:00, 7:30 and 8:00 pm. They were forewarned of the frightening (but family fun) experience that awaited them.  Guests screamed as spirits from the underworld visited the Preserve and lunged towards them causing our beautiful Preserve to turn into an atmosphere of terror.  Several zombies, the exorcist, and the grim reaper climbed onto the Trolly giving our guests moments of fear, adrenaline and extreme emotion as they came towards them and even grabbed their ankles. Along the journey, Mexican legends La Llorona and Charro Negro, the black horseman, jumped out at them causing shrieks and gasps while eerie music played in the background.  At the final part of the …
