Apart from the jungle covered mountains and sweeping coastline of Banderas Bay, one of the defining features of Puerto Vallarta is the Malecon. The beloved seafront boardwalk offers tourists and locals alike a wonderful encounter with nature as well as Mexican culture and art. Any vacation in Puerto Vallarta is not complete without a saunter along the Malecon, no matter how regular you visit this beach vacation destination.
Banderas Bay Sunsets
The Malecon is one of the prime locations to watch a breathtaking Puerto Vallarta sunset, whether from the comfort of a bar or restaurant or while sat in the public spaces. The sun sets over the ocean in Puerto Vallarta and so you are guaranteed a spectacular sight and a rendezvous with the natural beauty of Banderas Bay as you take a leisurely walk along the fully pedestrianized promenade.
Stores and Stalls
The Malecon is also a great place to find typical souvenirs, tequila, jewelry and beachwear. There are some great stores on the seafront for small gifts to take back home or a bikini or two. At night and during holidays you will find stalls selling all sorts of wonderful wares on the southern end of the Malecon, including native art, handicrafts, clothes as well as typical Mexican food.
There are a number of wonderful sculptures dotted all along the seafront, most of which are the work of local or national artists. Most of the sculptures have some marine or nautical reference and are a delightful pitstop for a photograph. You can also enjoy a guided tour of the statues delivered in English so that you can find out the history and significance of each sculpture.
You will also see some live sculptures as street performers take to the Malecon and create frozen statues that move when you donate a dollar or more. These make for delightful entertainment and are great to keep the kids happy. Also, as the main Malecon meets the new extension by the arches and municipal amphitheater, you will be greeted by regular performances by clowns or local theatrical groups.
As the Malecon converts into Los Muertos Beach, you will catch sight of the new pier from where you can take a water taxi to some of Puerto Vallarta’s beaches that can only be reached by boat. At night the pier lights up in multicolored fashion to show this modern addition to Puerto Vallarta in all its glory.
The other treat visitors to the Malecon can enjoy are the daily fireworks that you will see. The Marigalante Pirate ship tour guarantees fireworks every night, usually shot into the sky from just off the coast of the Malecon. During the Holidays, the Malecon is the perfect spot to watch a fantastic display of pyrotechnics that last for minutes at a time.
